Motivation is central to learning

• We are motivated to learn when we value the activity and we believe we can do it (self-efficacy)
• Self-efficacy comes with the confidence we get from success. It is therefore very important that tasks are set at an appropriate level of challenge and that scaffolding is provided where necessary.

The READ materials

• Encourage learners to value literacy
• Develop a positive self-concept
• Enable learners to develop a sense of self-efficacy with regard to reading, writing and viewing
• Enable learners to get into a ‘positive feedback loop’
